What makes a good carer?

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

Getting the right carers in our company is really important to make sure that we provide the best possible care to the client. In my role managing Tamar Care, I have seen a lot of applications for the role of care worker. Here’s what I look for when I’m deciding which carers to send into people’s homes.

They are passionate

The main thing I look for when I’m recruiting carers is that they are passionate about helping people. When carers have a true passion for their job, they are happier and the client is happier. It takes a special kind of person to be a carer, and if you’re receiving care, you need someone visiting you who really wants to support you and cares about getting it right.

They put you first

When I’m interviewing potential carers I make sure to ask them what is most important when they’re visiting a client. The very best carers talk about putting the client first, about making sure the client is happy with the care they are receiving, and that they are delivering care in the way that the client wants it.

They are kind and empathic

It is so important that carers are kind and able to empathise. Whatever your care needs are, from companionship to personal care, you need someone by your side who is kind and supportive.

They are responsible and trustworthy

Clients tell me that one of the most important things to them is that carers are responsible and trustworthy. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting around waiting for your carer to turn up. That’s why we carefully schedule our rotas and remind carers of how important it is to turn up at the right time. We also carry out thorough background checks to ensure that your carers are trustworthy.

They will go the extra mile

Forgotten you need a prescription picking up? Having a bad day and can’t get to the kitchen to make your lunch? A really good carer will be flexible and go above and beyond. At Tamar we’ll also review your care plan regularly so that carers are prepared to do whatever you need from them.

If you know someone who you think might have what it takes, we’re always looking for exceptional people to join our team. Check out our recruitment page.
